How Hard Is Pole Dancing?

By Susan Peach

With pole dancing becoming so popular as a form of fitness in recent years, you might be thinking of giving it a try yourself. But Your Pole Pal knows that the question on every hesitant newbie's mind is, just how hard is pole dancing?

beginner-pole-dancerTell me the truth...how hard is pole dancing???

Sure, it's a great way to improve strength, flexibility, and overall fitness (while having a whole lot of fun!), but is it suitable for beginners? Or is it a challenging sport best reserved only for those with a high level of fitness and years of training in a similar activity like dance or gymnastics? Let's take a look at how difficult pole dancing really is, and what to expect when starting out.

Strength, Endurance & Flexibility, Oh My!

First of all, it's essential to understand that pole dancing is a form of dance and acrobatics that requires physical strength, endurance, and flexibility. It combines elements of gymnastics and contemporary dance to create a unique and dynamic art form that challenges both the body and the mind.

It's also important to realize that we all have to start somewhere, and that top pole dance athletes have put in a lot of work to get where they are. So yes, even though good pole dancers certainly make it look easy, pole dancing is hard work! But that doesn't mean it can't be fun or enjoyable.

Keep in mind that your current fitness level, previous training, motivation and personal goals will determine how difficult pole dancing will be for you to learn. And with time and practice, you will improve your skills and gain confidence, so that moves you used to think were hard are now easy. Or at least, easier!

However, it's safe to say that pole dancing can be a very challenging sport, especially for beginners who are not used to the movements and positions. But if you're up for the challenge, and approach pole dancing as the demanding sport that it is, you'll likely find the journey rewarding.

Build A Strong Foundation

When starting pole dancing, it's wise for beginners to focus on gradually building strength, improving flexibility, and learning some basic foundation moves. These can include simple spins, climbs and holds. Once you're comfortable with the basics, you can gradually challenge yourself to master more difficult variations that require greater upper body and core strength, as well as spatial awareness, coordination and flexibility.

At first, a lot of these more advanced pole dancing moves can seem pretty daunting, but don't let that deter you. Remember, everyone has to start somewhere! The truth is that it will take time to build enough strength and confidence to execute the more advanced moves safely and correctly. However, with consistent practice and dedication, you'll make steady progress toward your goal.

If you stick with it - practicing regularly, setting goals, and getting proper training and coaching - you'll be able to tackle more advanced moves such as inversions, aerial tricks, and combinations that require a higher level of strength, flexibility, and skill. Realistically, it can take years of practice to master these advanced moves, and even then, there is always room for improvement and innovation. But this is the case with any form of dance, and is not unique to pole dancing.

Technique Matters

Perhaps the most challenging element of pole dancing is the need for proper technique and form. Unlike other types of exercise, such as running or weightlifting, pole dancing requires precise body positioning, spatial awareness, muscle engagement, and flexibility, often all at the same time. Without proper technique, you may not be able to execute the moves correctly, and you may injure yourself.

That's why serious students approach pole dancing as a sport which requires constant training in order to improve. While beginners can learn the basics at home with the help of manuals, DVDs, or online lessons, students who wish to progress to more advanced levels would do well to consider attending classes with a qualified instructor or coach. Professional training ensures you'll learn proper technique so you'll progress safely.

The Mental Game

Keep in mind that when people ask, "how hard is pole dancing?" they are often thinking only about the physical aspects of this sport. However, another factor that can make pole dancing challenging is the mental aspect. Pole dancing requires not only physical strength but also mental focus and self-confidence. It can be intimidating to perform in front of others or to attempt new moves that may seem impossibly difficult. The process of learning and mastering new moves can help you overcome these mental barriers and build the confidence and self-esteem needed to succeed with pole dancing.

Are you still wondering how hard pole dancing will be for you? The truth is that you may have to try it to find out for sure. Fortunately, many studios and online classes offer "taster" or trial classes where you can learn a few basics without having to commit to a full set of classes. You may want to check out the worldwide pole dancing directory to find a studio in your area.

To sum up, pole dancing can be challenging but it's also a rewarding form of exercise and self-expression. It requires physical strength, flexibility, and coordination, as well as mental focus and confidence, and you will work on all of these as you learn. For beginners, the difficulty level may seem high when watching advanced or competitive pole dancers, but with consistent practice and dedication, you can learn the basics and progress to advanced moves too. The key is to approach pole dancing with an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to your goals.
