By Susan Peach

Exotic pole dance songs can be a little intimidating at first for some pole dancers. But once you get to know them, they're a lot of fun!

This playlist features songs with strong beats and plenty of attitude—perfect for any piece of choreography with heels flow, or just to practice those extra sensual moves. This kind of music also helps you build the kind of stage presence that exudes confidence, so you can get out there and really own the pole.

The songs on this playlist made the cut because:

  • They have a strong, steady rhythm—ideal for heels flow and sensual, grounded choreography that's typical of the exotic style of pole dancing
  • The mood leans toward edgy and sensual—just what you need to channel your inner exotic dancer and project a sense of confidence and empowerment
  • In general, the tempo is in the slow to moderate range—this allows for the controlled, deliberate movements typical of the exotic style of pole dance

What Makes a Good Exotic Pole Dancing Song?

Exotic pole dance music has what can only be described as attitude—one that almost demands heels and sensuality And there's something even more powerful about exotic pole dancing songs with a slower tempo.

The best songs for exotic pole typically share some or all of the following aspects that make them a popular choice for exotic style pole dance:

  • A strong, consistent beat — exotic style pole is all about confidence. After all, confidence is about the sexiest thing going, right? A strong piece of music can help you execute your moves with control and intention. And being able to lean into a strong beat while appearing to stay in control of the music is what helps you exude the kind of confidence that epitomizes this style of pole dancing.
  • Deep bass — a heavy bass line can help you literally feel the music in your body, giving you another point of connection with the song and making it easier to hit your marks, pivots, and spins.
  • Clear musical accents — accents are perfect for incorporating dynamic transitions, striking poses, and making dramatic statements in your choreography. A note that is stressed gives you an opportunity to emphasize a pose; one that is held longer than expected allows you to extend a transition; and a syncopation or down-beat accent offers options to incorporate the unexpected.
  • A sensual or edgy mood — since exotic style pole dancing is by nature sensual, choosing music that is itself sensual, edgy or provocative supports a similar expression in your choreography. In other words, it's much easier to choreograph an exotic style pole routine if your music and your moves are speaking the same language.
  • Slow to Moderate tempo — a slower tempo allows you to stay in control of your choreography without rushing your movements. Exotic style pole dancing is less about speed and more about emphasis.

Exotic pole dance songs can be a bit intimidating exactly because a huge part of this style involves stepping into your power and connecting with your audience. And dancing from a place of empowerment and confidence is still a challenge for a lot of us.

Choosing a piece of music that helps you connect with that feeling might be just what you need to get more comfortable with the exotic style of pole dancing, or to take your exotic choreography to the next level.

Tips for Dancing to Exotic Pole Songs

Exotic pole is as much about how you move as what you do. Here are some choreography tips to get the most out of your exotic pole playlist:

  • Warm-Up Effectively
To prepare yourself for a session of exotic pole dance, be sure to incorporate the types of moves you'll be using into your warmup. Including hip circles, body waves and similar moves in your warmup will not only ensure you're loose and ready to dance, it will also help get you in the right frame of mind.
  • Stay grounded
Literally. Focus on pushing into the floor, whether that's with your feet, your hands, or your hips. For example, when walking, really emphasize the contact between your shoes and the floor by intentionally lingering just a little with every step, then pushing into the floor as you take your next step.
  • Take your time
Slow, controlled movement creates impact. Conversely, when you try to put too much movement into the space you have available in the music, your dancing can appear rushed. Exotic style pole is all about maintaining control, so better a simpler move executed with perfect control, than a more complex one that feels rushed.
  • Use your imagination
When practicing the slow and controlled exotic style of pole dance, one helpful tip is to imaging yourself moving through different mediums, for example water or molasses. This can help you develop a more fluid style in general.
  • Focus on attitude and presence
With exotic style pole dancing, pacing, focus and confidence matter as much as technique. Cultivate a strong stage presence (own that space!) and a confident attitude, even if your moves and your choreography are fairly simple. Attitude trumps tricks, and confidence trumps technique. Remember, sexy is built on confidence.
  • Visualize Your Audience
To help yourself get into the right mindset for exotic pole choreography, try imagining that you're dancing for a room full of admirers, or for your romantic idol. The mental game is half the battle here, so why not put your imagination to work for you? It might just be the edge you need to boost your confidence and turn up your sensuality.
  • Embrace the Challenge
Acknowledge that exotic style pole dance can be a real challenge. Especially if you don't have a background in dance outside of pole, it can be difficult at first. Be patient with yourself, set small goals, and try to enjoy the process of learning this challenging style.
