Trouble is, there are so many options out there that it can be hard to make the right choice. You definitely don't want to waste your hard-earned money on the wrong pole!
Never fear, Your Pole Pal is here to guide you through the maze of dance pole options. Here's what you'll find on this page...
And if you're still in the research phase, Your Pole Pal has you covered too. Near the bottom of this page you'll find links that provide lots more information, including reviews of some of the different poles, details about each type of pole, and safety information specific to the various kinds of dance poles.
It's a ton of information, but if you're wanting to buy a pole dancing pole it's important to do some research to make sure you buy the right pole for your needs.
So, let's get started!
Your Pole Pal likes to sort all the dance poles into six main types. These six types are listed below along with very brief descriptions. Each one also includes a link to a page where you can read more details about that type of pole if you wish.
But first, there are several factors to consider when you're deciding which type of dance pole is best for you. Which of these factors are most important to you will help you buy a pole dancing pole that's a good fit for your needs. Think about things like...
Now here are the different types of poles, so you can think about which one(s) might work best for you, given your answers to the above questions.
Permanent - the safest type of dance pole, a one-time installation is done via screws into both floor and ceiling joists.
Semi-permanent or removable - a cross between a permanent dance pole and either a portable or a friction mounted pole, a removable pole uses a friction floor pad at the base, but the top of the pole is inserted into or over a small ceiling mount that is screwed into a ceiling joist. The ceiling mount stays up permanently, but the pole can easily be installed and taken down in minutes. A great compromise between safety and portability.
Platform or stage - these poles are inserted into a large base or "stage" and don't require any floor or ceiling mounts. Great for use outdoors or in venues like arenas where the ceiling may be extremely high.
Friction or pressure mounted- rubber or silicone coated floor and ceiling pads hold these poles in place. The pole has either a heavy duty spring mechanism inside, or is extended to fit the ceiling height using a simple tool. One or two piece poles fall into this category, whereas multi-piece poles of this type are considered in the "portable" category.
Portable or travel - Similar to friction mounted poles, portable poles break down into several pieces of manageable length, and come with a carrying case for easy transport. Great for pole party presenters or anyone who might want to take their pole to different locations.
Rotating or Spinning - this is more of an option than a different type of pole, since nowadays any of the main pole types can be either stationary or rotating. It's an important distinction however, so Your Pole Pal likes to categorize it separately.
A 7th type - fly poles - are now available from one manufacturer, but as this type of pole is for very advanced users only, and is generally more appropriate in a studio or performance setting, we'll leave it aside for now. But if you're curious, you can check out the X-Pole Fly here.
Now that you know a little about the different types of dance poles, it's time to look at some of the main pros and cons of each type. This comparison should help you to narrow down your options so you can buy a pole dancing pole that's the best match for your needs.
To make the information easier to review, Your Pole Pal has created this handy chart to provide a list of at-a-glance pros and cons for each type of dance pole.
